The Dorn Method - How it works 1

Position 1 (part 1) in the practical manual application: Lying down position

Things to consider:

A Dorn Method Practitioner is more than just a Therapist he/she is a Health-Coach who guides Clients/Patients towards a Solution for their Back- and other health-problems by:

  1. Explaining the possible Causes of the Problem = Avoidance

  2. Applying a safe manual treatment as demonstration with and not just on the Patient = Demonstration session

  3. Teaching Self Help Exercises for long lasting Results = Health maintenance / Adjustment

How can the Dorn Method help?

By applying principals of Anatomy, Physiology, Physics and Nature Laws the Structural System is effectively re-aligned through guided self-regulation thus improving the muscular tension that puts stress onto the nervous system that connects the Brain with all other areas of the human body.

In an intensive DORN-Session the Clients/Patients Spine (and if necessary other Joints) is re-balanced through guided self-regulation using gentle and sensitive manual Impulses = counter-pressure (Client leans on practitioners hands) and dynamic actions (movements of the client) at the same time.

When the treatment becomes uncomfortable (before actual pain arises) the procedure can be stopped immediately by the client therefore this approach can be called safe.

When the Structural System is in a better Alignment the functional unit of Bones-Muscles-Ligaments-Fascia and Tissues can become more relaxed and will usually ease the pressure onto the nerves which often is the cause of Pain and other problems.

By avoiding wrong movements and habits that contribute towards structural imbalances or misalignments together with Self Help Exercises that simulate the Actions done during the manual treatment session over an extended period of Recovery Time (usually a minimum of 2 month) the Clients/Patients are likely to improve fast and only very few Sessions might be necessary. (usually only 2 to 3 sessions and of course more if necessary)

In a few cases a longer treatment period is advised and can be tailored to the convenience of the Client/Patient that includes a more intensive and individual teaching of Selfhelp/Self-Therapy with the Help of a Partner or Family Member.

Remember: Healing takes place within us and with a little discipline, understanding and time small miracles can happen.

The manual application (treatment part 1): Hip - Knee - Ankle

» The Treatment should start with detailed Explanations about the treatment procedures and the possible causes or contributing causes of Spinal Problems, Different Leg Length etc., so the Client/Patient learns what to do in order to avoid this in the future.

This is followed by the practical hands on manual application in 3 different positions: 1. lying, 2. standing and 3. sitting

There are always 3 parts in the practical application of DORN:

1. First comes an assessment in cooperation with the Client/Patient to make him/her aware of possible structural imbalances:
This assessment of the different areas like leg-lenght, knee, ankle, pelvis, thoracic spine, neck area as well as all other joints is done in cooperation with the Client/Patient. Areas not in balance are felt by sensitive hands of the DORN practitioner and/or indicated by the Client/Patient who only can feel them when these areas are beeing touched.

2. After the assessment the re-balancing through guided self-regulation is done together with the Client/Patient. The joints-structures are moved by the Client/Patient in a dynamic but simple natural way guided by the DORN practitioner while a careful, gentle pressure (counter pressure) is applied with a gradually increasing amout of force without inducing too much discomfort or pain and only for a very short time (seconds to minutes depending on the area and individual situation).

3. After the practical manual application the Client/Patient is shown some simple selfhelp exercises which are actually self-therapy exercises that copy the actions during the treatment part, and it should also be explained how to adjust uneven movements and bad postural patterns to achieve long lasting results and sometimes psychological connections are discussed which needs to be addressed to avoid reoccurrences.

Complementing treatments like deep neuro-muscular massage etc. are advised to assist the Healing and to avoid that the tensed muscles are provoking or causing further misalignments!

1. Position of the Client/Patient: supine position = lying down on a massage table (if available)

Hip-joint / Pelvis area:

First the Clients/Patients leg length is controlled and if necessary corrected through guided self-regulation in a lying down position. The hip joint is brought to a (more or less) 90 degree position and the leg is then brought back to its straight (natural) position while guiding the structures back into its original place and balance with gentle careful pressure. This procedure demonstrates how this can be done by the Client/Patient him-/herself and it is absolutely safe, easy to do and should be painless! This is always done (demonstrated) on both sides of the body!
» The respective Selfhelp /Selftherapy exercises are then demonstrated and taught to the Client/Patient

Kneejoints / Anklejoints:

The treatment (re-balancing) of Knees and Ankles should then follow with the same principals: Gentle pressure towards the joint while moving it from a bended to a more straight position. This is always done (demonstrated) on both sides of the body!

» The respective Selfhelp /Selftherapy exercises are then demonstrated and taught to the Client/Patient.

After all joints are re-balanced in lying position the Client/Patient stands up, should relax and walk a few steps to enjoy the feeling and then the procedure is continued with position 2, in a standing position.

DORN Method demonstration video:

The DORN Method video demonstration. The Video shows the complete practical application of the Dorn Method. Backpain sufferers can get an impression what to expect during a Dorn session and Dorn Practitioners and Instructors can review or refresh their knowledge and skills with this video. The complete full lenght video is available through my webshop and is highly recommended. It shows all the original techniques developed by Dieter Dorn and aditional and new advanced techniques are also demonstrated. If you look for the real DORN Method this video demonstration is your standard reference! NOTE: Never try to use the DORN Method on other people without proper training best conducted by an authorized DORN Method Instructor. Although the DORN Method and the Self Help Exercises are very safe if done correctly, the DORN practitioner is not responsible for any consequences resulting from the application during the manual session and Selfhelp exercises. In any case it is advised to consult your doctor first because health problems and back pains may have other causes than misaligned joints and vertebrae and should be checked by a trained medical doctor or other healthcare professional. The DORN Method has certain Limitations that must be cleared prior to any practical application! Remember: The DORN Method is NO Replacement for any other form of medical or non-medical treatment but it can be a very effective complement in an integrative medical system.
